Schoenfeld, Ogborn and Krieger published a systematic review with meta-regression in the Journal of Sports Sciences in 2017, pooling 34 treatment groups from 15 studies. Treating weekly sets as a continuous variable, they found a significant effect of volume on muscle size: each additional weekly set was associated with a 0.37% increase in gains.
That number deserves a slow read. It is small per set, and there lies the catch almost nobody flags: it is a graded relationship, not an unlimited promise. Adding sets pays off while you can still recover from them.
