How to do it

Lying down, bring opposite elbow and knee together rotating the trunk from the obliques, not the neck. Alternate slow and controlled; the extending leg doesn't touch the floor.

Muscles worked

Main muscle: abs. When it plans weekly volume, every set of this exercise counts in full for abs: the generator does not split it with other muscles.

Bicycle crunch or reverse crunch: rotating the torso versus curling the pelvis

What separates them is what actually moves. In the bicycle crunch your torso flexes and rotates again and again while your legs pedal, so the obliques work about as hard as the rectus abdominis. In the reverse crunch the torso stays put and the pelvis curls toward the ribs with no twist at all. Compared with the plank or the dead bug, which ask you to hold a position, this one is continuous motion, which makes it more of a dynamic, endurance-style movement.

Pick it when you want longer sets and a steady rhythm, say at the end of a session or inside a circuit, and when the floor is all the equipment you have. It makes sense once the basic crunch feels easy and you want to add a rotation. If your neck tends to tense up, keep your hands light beside your temples instead of pulling on your head; if your lower back complains, shorten the pedaling and slow down. If pain lingers, check with a professional.

Progressing does not mean speeding up. Pause for a second each time elbow meets knee, or stretch the set while keeping the same tempo. When the pace climbs, the rotation is almost always the first thing to disappear.

Recommended sets and reps

As an isolation exercise, it works best in 3–4 sets of 10–15 reps with 0–2 RIR. Use it at the end of the session to add volume without systemic fatigue.

Common mistakes to avoid

What the research says

This is an isolation exercise. For beginners, adding it on top of compound lifts does not always help: in the trial by Gentil and colleagues (2013), people who only did lat pulldowns gained as much arm size as those who also did curls. It earns its place with experience, and for muscles the big lifts leave short.

On how hard to push: the meta-analysis by Refalo and colleagues (2023) found no clear advantage in going to failure over stopping just short of it. That is why the generator programs it with reps in reserve (RIR) instead of asking for failure on every set.

How Bicycle crunch compares with other abs exercises

Of the 14 abs exercises in the catalogue, ranked from least to most fatiguing by the values the generator uses, Bicycle crunch is number 3 (tied with 4 others).

That makes it a good candidate for adding abs sets at the end of a session or in heavy weeks, when you want volume without extra fatigue.

With different equipment, the same movement pattern offers 3 alternatives, such as Cable crunch, Pallof press and Landmine rotation.

Bodyweight. In the trial by Kotarsky et al. (2018), four weeks of progressively harder push-ups significantly improved bench press 1RM, just like training the bench press itself. It is a strength result, not a hypertrophy one, and the condition is the word progressive: the exercise has to keep getting harder.

An isolation exercise. In the trial by Gentil et al. (2015), with untrained young men over ten weeks, the biceps curl and the lat pulldown were equally effective for gaining strength and size in the elbow flexors: isolation is not filler.

Frequently asked questions

What muscles does Bicycle crunch work?

Bicycle crunch mainly works the abs muscle group, plus synergist and stabilizer muscles depending on the variation.

How many sets of Bicycle crunch should I do?

Between 3 and 5 sets per session, adjusting the total weekly volume for abs to your level (about 10–20 sets per muscle per week).

Do I have to touch my knee with my elbow on every rep?

Not necessarily. What matters is that the twist comes from your ribcage, not from yanking on your neck or shrugging your shoulders. If elbow and knee do not quite meet, bring them as close as you can while staying in control. The range usually grows on its own over a few weeks, and slow beats fast every time.
