How to do it
In a plank, travel sideways moving the hand and foot of the same side without letting the hips sway. Keep the core braced and the straight line from heels to head throughout.

Recommended sets and reps
As an isometric exercise, it is programmed by time: 3–4 sets of 20–45 seconds holding tension without losing position. Increase time under tension before adding difficulty.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Pulling on the neck with your hands and flexing at the hips instead of curling the spine with the abs.
- Using too much weight at the cost of technique and full range of motion.
- Doing reps too fast, without controlling the eccentric (lowering) phase.
Why adding movement to a plank changes what you are training
The static plank has a known problem: it improves fast and then turns into a contest of holding for minutes. Someone who reaches three minutes does not have a core three times stronger than someone who holds one; they have more tolerance for staying still. Adding lateral travel changes the nature of the exercise, and there is published work that helps explain why.
McGill and Karpowicz published a study on spine stabilisation exercises — curl-up, side bridge and bird-dog — in Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in 2009, measuring muscle activity and three-dimensional spine position in each progression. Two findings matter here: that adding hand or foot movement during the bird-dog increased activation across several muscle groups compared with a pure isometric hold, and that oblique activation rose when bracing the abdominal wall, though different techniques migrated the activity towards other muscles.
A necessary clarification, because other pages on this site explain that activation measured in one session does not predict hypertrophy. That is true, and it remains true. But here activation is the appropriate measure: in a stabilisation exercise you are not after size, you are after the capacity to resist unwanted movement. Comparing versions of the same exercise by how hard the musculature has to work to keep the spine still is exactly what is worth measuring.

The practical application is what makes this exercise more than a pretty variation. Every time you shift support to one side, for an instant the weight is distributed asymmetrically and the hip tries to rotate or drop. Preventing that without the hip moving is the entire exercise. If your hip drifts as you travel, you are not doing a plank with lateral travel: you are doing a bad plank in motion.
That is why the progression criterion is not distance or speed but how much stillness you keep at the pelvis while you move. Two or three controlled shifts per side without swaying are worth more than ten dragging the hip.
