How to do it
Elbows slightly bent and fixed: the movement comes from the shoulder, bring the hands to the midline squeezing the chest. Step forward for constant tension and control the opening.

Recommended sets and reps
As an isolation exercise, it works best in 3–4 sets of 10–15 reps with 0–2 RIR. Use it at the end of the session to add volume without systemic fatigue.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Bouncing the bar or dumbbells off the chest instead of controlling the final part of the range.
- Using too much weight at the cost of technique and full range of motion.
- Doing reps too fast, without controlling the eccentric (lowering) phase.
Cable crossovers, cable flyes: the same movement and why the cable beats the dumbbell
The name needs clearing up first, because it causes constant confusion: cable crossovers, cable flyes, chest cable crossovers and high cable crossovers all name the same movement, a horizontal shoulder adduction with the elbows nearly fixed. What changes is the pulley height and how far the hands cross at the end, not the exercise.
What genuinely changes is the comparison with dumbbell flyes, and not because of the muscle worked but because of where the resistance sits. With dumbbells the load is imposed by gravity: it is greatest with the arms open — the pec stretched — and almost vanishes at the top, where the hands end up over the chest. With a cable the tension is imposed by the cable itself, pulling in a straight line towards the machine throughout the whole range.
Why that matters is summarised by a systematic review from Schoenfeld and Grgic published in SAGE Open Medicine in 2020 on the effect of range of motion on muscle development. And its bigger sibling, the 2023 review by Kassiano, Costa, Nunes and colleagues across eleven studies, is more specific still: full range and partial range performed at the beginning of the movement — that is, with the muscle long — produced more growth than partials performed at the end, and they recommend combining initial-range work with full-range training.

The practical conclusion is not that the dumbbell is bad: it loads very well precisely the position the evidence flags as most productive, the long-muscle one. It is that the cable adds what the dumbbell lacks — tension in the final stretch — without removing what it does well. If you pick only one, the cable covers more useful range.
And one execution detail that decides more than pulley height: the elbows stay slightly bent and fixed throughout. The moment they open and close, the exercise stops being a fly and becomes a badly performed press, with the triceps taking a share of the work you wanted in the pec.
