If you are starting from scratch, what matters is not the perfect exercise but learning the basic movement patterns and staying consistent. These routines favour movements that are easy to control, with sets kept away from failure so you can focus on technique. Volume is deliberately moderate: at the start you progress fast with little, and doing too much only causes soreness that makes people quit.

One set or several per exercise? What is worth knowing when you start

Beginners in the gym usually get two opposite pieces of advice: that one set per exercise is enough, or that you need lots of sets for it to work. Krieger summarised it in 2010 in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research with a meta-analysis of eight studies and 55 effect sizes on hypertrophy, valid for both trained and untrained people.

Doing multiple sets produced more muscle growth than a single set. Going from one set to two or three clearly increased the effect, and going up to four to six increased it a little more, but the difference between two-three and four-six sets was not significant.

4-60.44

For a beginner routine that translates into something simple: two or three sets per exercise already capture most of the benefit, and extra volume pays off less and less right when you are still learning technique. That is why these routines keep volume moderate: early on you progress fast with little, and the time not spent on filler sets goes into doing the ones that count properly.

The limits, stated plainly: eight studies and a 2010 paper, measuring effect sizes rather than kilos of muscle. It works as a reasonable starting point, not as an exact number.
