Barbell curl: proper form, muscles worked and common mistakes

How to do it
Standing with the elbows fixed at your sides; curl the bar by contracting the biceps without swinging the hips. Lower under control to near full extension to keep tension.
Muscles worked
Main muscle: biceps. When it plans weekly volume, every set of this exercise counts in full for biceps: the generator does not split it with other muscles.
Barbell curl or EZ bar curl: what changes when you grip straight
Compared with the EZ bar curl, the straight bar forces a fully supinated grip with the wrists in line, which gives the purest biceps contraction but loads the wrists and elbows more. With the EZ bar the grip is semi-pronated and more comfortable. In return, the straight bar is the standard for loading heavy: it accepts the smallest weight jumps with fractional plates. Also, both arms push one bar, so the strong side can cover for the weak one, something that does not happen in the Alternating dumbbell curl.
It is the option for people whose wrists tolerate it well and who want to add load in a measurable way, in sets of about six to twelve reps. Put it early in your arm session. If your wrists feel awkward, switch to the EZ bar or adjust your grip width. Stand with your back against a wall if you tend to swing: that makes cheating very difficult.
Progress with double progression: hold the load until you complete the top of the rep range with good form, and only then go up a little. If you need a hip thrust to finish, the weight is too heavy.

Recommended sets and reps
As an isolation exercise, it works best in 3–4 sets of 10–15 reps with 0–2 RIR. Use it at the end of the session to add volume without systemic fatigue.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Swinging the body and letting the elbows drift forward, turning the curl into a shoulder movement.
- Gripping the bar with each hand at a different distance from the center: one side works harder without you noticing.
- Cutting short the part of the range where the muscle is stretched: that is exactly where this exercise gives the most stimulus.
What the research says
As an isolation move, it is mostly a way to add volume to one muscle. Gentil and colleagues (2013) found that, in beginners, adding it to a multi-joint exercise gave no extra arm growth; it pays off later on, or for muscles the compounds barely reach.
Its peak tension comes with the muscle stretched, and that matters: in the trial by Maeo and colleagues (2021), seated leg curls, which stretch the hamstrings more, built more muscle than lying curls, and Pedrosa and colleagues (2022) saw something similar in the quads when training the long end of the range.
On how hard to push: the meta-analysis by Refalo and colleagues (2023) found no clear advantage in going to failure over stopping just short of it. That is why the generator programs it with reps in reserve (RIR) instead of asking for failure on every set.

How Barbell curl compares with other biceps exercises
Of the 16 biceps exercises in the catalogue, ranked from least to most fatiguing by the values the generator uses, Barbell curl is number 14 (tied with 2 others).
That makes it a good candidate for adding biceps sets at the end of a session or in heavy weeks, when you want volume without extra fatigue.
With different equipment, the same movement pattern offers 12 alternatives, such as Band concentration curl, Resistance band biceps curl and Band hammer curl.

Tension with the muscle stretched. Barbell curl loads the muscle when it is longest. In the review by Kassiano et al. (2023), across eleven studies, full range of motion and partials performed in the initial part of the movement — with the muscle long — produced more growth than partials performed at the end.
An isolation exercise. In the trial by Gentil et al. (2015), with untrained young men over ten weeks, the biceps curl and the lat pulldown were equally effective for gaining strength and size in the elbow flexors: isolation is not filler.

Frequently asked questions
What muscles does Barbell curl work?
Barbell curl mainly works the biceps muscle group, plus synergist and stabilizer muscles depending on the variation.
How many sets of Barbell curl should I do?
Between 3 and 5 sets per session, adjusting the total weekly volume for biceps to your level (about 10–20 sets per muscle per week).
Is the straight bar or the EZ bar better for biceps?
Neither is better across the board. The straight bar allows a fully supinated grip and the heaviest loads; the EZ bar takes tension off the wrists and elbows. Use the one that lets you curl without discomfort and with good control. If the straight bar bothers you, the EZ bar is a perfectly valid alternative: what counts is full range and progression.
